Nelleke from Newly Blend shares her story!

Hi! My name is Nelleke. I will share my journey that led to the development of Newly Blend. 

I love cooking and I love preparing dinner for the whole family. My youngest son Maurits was only 4 years old when he suddenly could no longer eat with us. He had an accident and suffered serious brain damage. His motor skills were severely damaged, and he could no longer eat normally because he could no longer chew.

He was given a feeding tube. I had never heard of it before, but as with most things, you eventually get used to it. With the stomach tube came the tube feeding. A pallet was delivered to us every month. I bought a shed especially for it because I couldn't store it in my kitchen. The tube feeding had little to do with the food I prepared. It was milky, didn't smell very fresh and was very sticky. Maurits didn't like it. In fact... he suffered from it. Vomiting, reflux and constipation were complaints daily. It got so bad that Maurits could no longer go to special education with the student transport. The excessive vomiting made the driver not dare to do it anymore. It was time for a change!

Eating should be something nice! You feed your body, and it gives you energy. Food smells like food and tastes like food. But Maurits' tube feeding had nothing to do with that. It was functional and not even that with all those side effects. For the side effects we were given medication that also had other side effects. Something had to change because it couldn't go on like this.

I started blending my own meals 12 years ago. Within a month I had a different son. We were able to reduce the medication. The vomiting was completely gone, and all other complaints had simply disappeared. What a difference! I started to delve into liquid nutrition and learned all kinds of techniques to ensure that the food has sufficient nutritional value and energy and has the right viscosity to be injected properly. I enjoy feeding Maurits every day and so does he. He can smell and taste his food again.
